Editor’s Picks: Week 1 Module “Tiny Landscapes”
Creativity has many faces, and they look like you.
The freshly formed Imagine That Photography Tribe started our 52-week project a couple weeks ago with the theme “Tiny Landscapes” with a focus on macro photography.
Every week, the Tribe looks at a specific task in photography and posts their best photo from the week on our Facebook page. We comment on the photos, share information, and Imagine That picks a few choice photos to feature as that week’s Editor’s Picks.
Here’s what we learned from the project on “Tiny Landscapes.”
Abstraction – Wei Hien
Wei Hien’s photograph illustrates the commonly spouted principle, “Fill the frame.” He fills the frame with the nexus of the cactus plant he’s photographing, using the lines and patterns on the plant to make his composition.
Design – Mihaela
Mihaela’s photo of bubbles also uses patterns to design the composition. The repetition of the shapes and the limited color palette of the photograph works to make the bubbles pop! in the image.
Technique – Jessica Williams
Jessica uses a technique in macro photography of limited depth of field. The shallow depth of field works to isolate the subject from the background and renders the background in a painterly blur.
Subject- Schalk Ras
From Ras we learn patience in looking for the classic macro study—a disco colored bug! Also noted is the composition. By using just enough of the leaf in a graphic way, Ras uses the line the leaf presents in a diagonal to make a dynamic composition.
Lighting – Cynthia Swidler
Finally, Cynthia uses creative lighting to give her bright flower a glow. She used a candle behind the petals to light her macro, also making the background glow in the same color, making an image that looks like it’s on fire!
The results of this first project show that perspective, point of view, how to see creatively and visual problem solving can be learned in a photo project. Here are the other participants’ photos in the Tiny Landscapes module.
Why not join the Imagine That Photography Tribe and see your skills soar in 2012! Visit our Facebook Page and see how you can contribute and work your way through 52 Projects that will improve your photography (and be so much fun!). Next week’s highlights will be from Week 2′s Module Backlit Beauty.
