Backstage at Uluwatu
Photos by Aloha Lavina
From a sleepy rice farming community, the village of Uluwatu has transformed itself into prosperity thanks to Kecak, a chanting musical featuring familiar characters from the Ramayana. Because it’s such an exciting, beautiful show, I’ve gone three times in as many trips to Bali. For 70,000 Rupiah, you can catch this show daily at Uluwatu, around 1.5 hours from Ubud and half an hour from Denpasar.
Here are some shots from backstage.

A couple of groups dance at Uluwatu. Each dancer 'works' three days a week and keeps their day jobs, mostly hotel or restaurant related.

Rama, the graceful principal character in the Ramayana, is played by a woman to denote his grace and youthfulness.

I’m usually not the guy to write comments on people’s blogs, but for your write up I simply needed to do it. I’ve been searching around your website a lot recently and I am really impressed, I think you could potentially become a main voices for your niche. Not sure what your load is like in life, but if you started devoting more effort to posting on this site, I’d bet you would start seeing a lot of visitors soon. With advertisements, it might become a sweet second income stream. Just something to think about. Good luck!

Hi Douglas, Thanks very much for visiting and leaving a kind comment. I do have a heavy “load” in my life–a full time job, freelancing in writing and photography, and hardly have a weekend absolutely with nothing to do, so posting more is a challenge. Right now I am off for a few days, so I’ve been trying to beef up the postings, anticipating skinny months ahead because of other, professional commitments. I am hoping sound writing and compelling photos will do the trick, quality rather than quantity, what do you think?
